The 2017 ISI World Recreational Team Championships in Southern California was “out of this world,” as more than 1,600 skaters competed on five sheets of ice in two facilities, The Rinks – Anaheim ICE and Lakewood ICE.

Iceoplex Simi Valley of California took home the Michael Booker Trophy for the most overall team points. The President’s Award went to The Rinks – Lakewood ICE. SuperStars Figure Skating Club of Skokie, Ill. earned the Board of Director’s Award, and the Percentage Award was given to Ice Sports Forum of Tampa, Fla.

Almost 80 rink teams from 16 states and three other countries participated in Worlds, for a total of 5,225 individual and team performances throughout the week. Competitors ranged in age from 1 to 80. The youngest competitors were Peyton Dudley of Stars of Austin FSC and Akira Mekchai of Pasadena Ice Skating Center. Joseph Kasputys of FMC William Chase Arena was the oldest skater.

Highlights of the six-day event included a fantastic ISI Benefit Show featuring 2017 U.S. national bronze medalist Mariah Bell as well as talented ISI skaters (see list below); a fun competitors’ party at Camelot Golfland; skating clinics led by 2015 U.S. Figure Skating/PSA Coach of the Year Rafael Arutyunyan and Bell; and a bustling Skaters’ Marketplace.

Special thanks to staff and volunteers at both facilities for helping make this year’s event a success. As cliché as it sounds, it takes a village to pull off an event of this magnitude!

Next year’s ISI Worlds is scheduled for July 23-28 at New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass. We look forward to seeing our skaters and their families there!
