Madeleine Shaw, 13, who skates at Frank South Bloomington Ice Arena in Bloomington, Ind., is the winner of the 2016 Holiday Card Creativity Contest.
An eighth grader, Madeleine has been an ISI member for four years and has been skating since the age of 5.
“I’ve always loved art, so when I heard that there was a holiday card contest going on for ISI via the email, I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “I have always been doing art since I was little and have been taking art classes — sketching and drawing — for a while. It has always been a passion of mine.”
Madeleine skates just about every day and takes lessons twice weekly. She competes in the ISI Miami Open annually and also participates in various other competitions, including both ISI national events and U.S. Figuring Skating events. She attends the Ohio Figure Skating Camp in the summer.
Madeleine enjoys skating because she has made many friends through the sport, has fun progressing and meeting skills, and has had wonderful experiences. She also loves the feel of her blades on the ice!
While Madeleine is passionate about art, her favorite classes in school include science and math because not only does she enjoy the subject matter, but she also adores her teachers.
She has been taking both piano and cello lessons for a while and competes in her school’s Science Olympiad and track team.
Her thoughts on ISI? “ISI has benefited me because I can improve my skills and reach new levels,” she says. “I love reading online articles and staying updated with the emails. The Ice Skating Institute has pushed me to test my skating by trying new things and challenging myself.”
