Competitors’ Corner – Open Freestyle Challenge

How much do you know about this fun event?

Open Freestyle is one of the fastest growing categories for both local and national competitions. See how many questions you can answer correctly.

1. Do all skaters participating in an Open Freestyle event have to take Open Freestyle tests?

No – all current ISI skaters who have passed any “traditional” ISI Freestyle test automatically qualify for the Open Freestyle equivalent level. These skaters do not need to take any additional test unless they want to move up to a higher level.

A skater who has yet to take a traditional ISI Freestyle test should start by taking and passing the Open Bronze Freestyle.

2. Does your Open Freestyle competition event program have to include all the required maneuvers for the Open Freestyle TEST at that same level?

No – this is a big difference from the traditional Freestyle 1-10 programs. Many skaters find that the Open Freestyle competition events allow more flexibility for skaters to pick and choose their very best maneuvers. However, we recommend a well-balanced program so skaters should pay close attention to the maneuver limitations.

Skaters can perform any maneuvers from the levels listed below:

Bronze Freestyle 3 and below
Silver Freestyle 5 and below
Gold Freestyle 7 and below
Platinum Any skating maneuvers

3. Can skaters who have only passed the Open Freestyle tests compete in Solo Compulsory events?

Yes – skaters who have only passed the Open Freestyle tests (and not the traditional Freestyle 1-10 tests) must compete at these levels for Solo Compulsory events:

Bronze Freestyle 3
Silver Freestyle 5
Gold Freestyle 7
Platinum Can choose any Freestyle 8-10 level

4. What is the Judging Criteria for the new Open Freestyle events?

(Skaters should always be aware of the judging criteria before putting together a new program)

Judge 1 = Correctness of Jumps / Variety of Moves / Presentation / General Overall
Judge 2 = Correctness of Spins / Music Interpretation / Posture / General Overall
Judge 3 = Correctness of Turns and Edges / Choreography & Pattern / Duration / General Overall
